A number of people and organisations are responsible for the development of e-commerce and the World Wide Web.
E-commerce, also known as electronic commerce, is the buying and selling of goods and services via the internet. CompuServe, an electronic marketplace launched in 1979, was the first known example of e-commerce (Turban et al., 2014, p.4)
The World Wide Web, also known as the Web, is a network of interconnected hypertext documents that can be accessed via the internet. Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist, invented the Web in 1989. (Berners-Lee, Fischetti, & Bly, 1999, p. 1). Berners-Lee created the first Web browser and Web server, as well as the first Web page, at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).
